The top photo is my baby Ruffian, born in 1972, died in 1975. My favorite female racehorse, unbeaten, died running on her side after surgery following her breakdown in the infamous match race between 1975 Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. She could have run in the ‘75 Derby - and in my opinion, would have won it - but her trainer kept her out.
The bottom photo is Orb, the winner of the 2013 Kentucky Derby. He is owned by the people who owned Ruffian. He is descended from Ruffian’s half-sister.
Ruffian’s colors finally made it to the Winner’s Circle of the Kentucky Derby. Excuse me while I wipe tears from my eyes.
